It argues McIntire and WXUR are underappreciated factors that contributed to the death of the doctrine. In 1987, the FCC repealed this policy, which required radio and TV stations to devote a reasonable amount of air time to issues of public importance within the licensee's community, and to offer programs addressing opposing views on important community issues. The FCC denied WXUR's license renewal request in 1970, concluding the station had failed to comply with the doctrine. Despite their historical significance, McIntire and WXUR have been largely ignored by media studies scholars. McIntire's crusade influenced lawmakers, the courts and the American public. His legacy did not end when the FCC suspended its fairness requirements. The Fairness Doctrine's demise contributed to a resurgence of politically conservative commentary on U.S. radio airwaves. Today's talk radio stations are dominated by conservative voices, thanks, in part, to McIntire's crusade. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in U.S. broadcast history and telecommunications policy.","merchants_number":1,"ean":9783639274592,"category_id":103,"size":null,"min_price":72.5,"low_price_merchant_id":1087639,"ID":4776839,"merchants":["dodax"],"brand":"undefined","slug":"carl-mcintires-crusade-against-the-fairness-doctrine","url":"\/unterhaltung\/produkt\/carl-mcintires-crusade-against-the-fairness-doctrine\/","low_price_merchant_name":null}

Conrad was born William Cann in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of a theatre-owner who moved to southern California, where he excelled at drama and literature while at school. Starting work in radio in the late 1930s in California, Conrad went on to serve as a fighter pilot in World War II. He entered the army in 1942, and was commissioned at Luke Field, Arizona in 1943 (now Luke Air Force Base). On the day of his commission he married June Nelson. He returned to the airwaves after the war, going on to accumulate over 7,000 roles in radio by his own estimate. Conrad began his career as an announcer, writer and director for the Los Angeles radio station KMPC in the late 1930s. His radio career was briefly interrupted when he served as a fighter-pilot in 1943, serving in World War Two. Two years later, he left the US Army Air Force with the rank of captain, having finished his time in the service as producer-director of the Armed Forces Radio Service.","merchants_number":1,"ean":9786131282478,"category_id":103,"size":null,"min_price":37,"low_price_merchant_id":1087639,"ID":5271419,"merchants":["dodax"],"brand":"undefined","slug":"william-conrad","url":"\/unterhaltung\/produkt\/william-conrad\/","low_price_merchant_name":null}
