The text serves as a bridge between computational courses such as calculus, and more theoretical, proofs-oriented courses such as linear algebra, abstract algebra and real analysis. This 3-part work carefully balances Proofs, Fundamentals, and Extras. Part 1 presents logic and basic proof techniques, Part 2 thoroughly covers fundamental material such as sets, functions and relations, and Part 3 introduces a variety of extra topics such as groups, combinatorics and sequences. A gentle, friendly style is used, in which motivation and informal discussion play a key role, and yet high standards in rigor and in writing are never compromised. New to the second edition: 1) A new section about the foundations of set theory has been added at the end of the chapter about sets. This section includes a very informal discussion of the Zermelo? Fraenkel Axioms for set theory. We do not make use of these axioms subsequently in the text, but it is valuable for any mathematician to be aware that an axiomatic basis for set theory exists. Also included in this new section is a slightly expanded discussion of the Axiom of Choice, and new discussion of Zorn's Lemma, which is used later in the text. 2) The chapter about the cardinality of sets has been rearranged and expanded. There is a new section at the start of the chapter that summarizes various properties of the set of natural numbers, these properties play important roles subsequently in the chapter. The sections on induction and recursion have been slightly expanded, and have been relocated to an earlier place in the chapter (following the new section), both because they are more concrete than the material found in the other sections of the chapter, and because ideas from the sections on induction and recursion are used in the other sections. Next comes the section on the cardinality of sets (which was originally the first section of the chapter), this section gained proofs of the Schroeder?Bernstein theorem and the Trichotomy Law for Sets, and lost most of the material about finite and countable sets, which has now been moved to a new section devoted to those two types of sets. The chapter concludes with the section on the cardinality of the number systems. 3) The chapter on the construction of the natural numbers, integers and rational numbers from the Peano Postulates was removed entirely. That material was originally included to provide the needed background about the number systems, particularly for the discussion of the cardinality of sets, but it was always somewhat out of place given the level and scope of this text. The background material about the natural numbers needed for the cardinality of sets has now been summarized in a new section at the start of that chapter, making the chapter both self-contained and more accessible than it previously was. 4) The section on families of sets has been thoroughly revised, with the focus being on families of sets in general, not necessarily thought of as indexed. 5) A new section about the convergence of sequences has been added to the chapter on selected topics. This new section, which treats a topic from real analysis, adds some diversity to the chapter, which had hitherto contained selected topics of only an algebraic or combinatorial nature. 6) A new section called ``You Are the Professor'' has been added to the end of the last chapter. This new section, which includes a number of attempted proofs taken from actual homework exercises submitted by students, offers the reader the opportunity to solidify her facility for writing proofs by critiquing these submissions as if she were the instructor for the course. 7) All known errors have been corrected. 8) Many minor adjustments of wording have been made throughout the text, with the hope of improving the exposition.
["dodax

For two weeks every year public roads become the world s most famous racetrack and the bravest and most skilled riders put their courage and abilities to the ultimate test. Now you can join the stars for 13 complete laps recorded from on-board the racing machines during the 2010 TT. It is a white-knuckle thrill-ride and you will be leaping back from the screen as walls, hedges and houses flash past, just inches from the camera, at speeds approaching 200mph. Volume One A rear-facing camera on Keith Amor s HM Plant Honda Superbike lets you feel every bump as he laps at an average speed of 127.925mph. You will feel your stomach somersault as the rear of the Superbike goes light over the leaps and bounces just inches from the kerbs. The sound of the screaming 1000cc engine leaves you in no doubt about the ferocious power Amor is unleashing around the TT course. Next, TT legend John McGuinness carries a forward-facing camera on his HM Plant Honda Superbike as he sets the fastest TT lap recorded by an on-bike camera so far. You will be awe-struck as the undoubted current King of the Mountain stuns the opposition with an average speed of 130.242mph almost 9 seconds quicker than anyone else, despite being held-up! Kiwi Bruce Anstey takes the Relentless Suzuki by TAS Racing Superbike around at 127.915mph, with a forward-facing camera letting you appreciate Anstey s stylish riding. He may be smooth, but don t be fooled into thinking he s slow the speed the hedges and walls flash by, the way the camera lifts as he powers through the gears and the throaty roar of the 1000cc Suzuki give you every sensation of speed . Finally we join Anstey s teammate Cameron Donald with a front-facing camera mounted on the Australian s Relentless Suzuki by TAS Racing Superbike. It shows how the machine bucks and fights back against his aggressive style. He must be doing something right he managed an average of 128.011mph from a standing start! Volume Two Keith Amor carries a rear-facing camera on his HM Plant Honda for lap four of the PokerStars Superbike TT. We average 128.973mph and watch the incredible sight of Cameron Donald closing at speed and a 12-mile battle as the Australian hunts down his Scottish rival. We join Bruce Anstey on the Relentless Suzuki by TAS Racing machine for the first lap of the Superbike race lap of the year. The forward-facing camera shows Anstey has an almost clear track ahead, so there is nothing to distract us from the rider s supreme skill as he handles the 1000cc Suzuki, battling with the machine s shaking head as it descends Bray Hill and clatters over the bumps on the run to Ramsey during a 126.934mph opening lap. It is then over to Anstey s teammate Donald on lap two of the Superbike TT, with a forward-facing camera showing you the lurid sides and wobbles through Glen Helen and the forks being forced to work all over the course at an average speed of 129.034mph. Finally, we join Klaus Klaffenbock on his way to a popular first TT win in the opening Sure Sidecar Race. The forward-facing camera is mounted just in front of seasoned passenger Daniel Sayle for this storming lap, where speeds hit up to 145mph in the 600cc LCR Honda outfit. At Sulby Klaffi joins a thrilling nose-to-tail battle with fellow world champion Tim Reeves which shows just how exciting the chairs are around the TT course. Volume Three A rear-facing camera lets you feel every slide as rear tyre of Michael Dunlop s Street Sweep/Robinson Concrete Superbike fights for grip under the power of the 1000cc Honda engine on lap four of the PokerStars Superbike TT. They join in a single shared pursuit: watching in horror as their youngest generations squander money in ways so staggering that Western show-offs look like pikers by comparison Mr. Kwan has good aim with his fashion world- and ego-skewering shivs. And regardless of how reality-based these characters may be, he has his style references down cold [Keeps] readers surprised and inquisitive Snarky Wicked Funny. Janet Maslin, The New York Times As the real China rich dig their nails into the world of the wealthy and wasteful, Kwan sharpens his with another acerbic yet affectionate examination of Asian uber-elite social mores, still largely invisible in Western popular culture The novel is filled with jaw-dropping accounts of opulence and showdowns worthy of an episode of "Gossip Girl." China Rich Girlfriend is a crazy parade through the lives of the aspirational elite. It's also a rich portrait of Asia's real obsession with consumerism and its economic rise, one whose trajectory, like Kwan's, is not yet complete. Nicole Lee, Los Angeles Times In this year s best beach reading, Jane Austen meets Singapore There s no timely cocktail I d rather recommend than China Rich Girlfriend As frothy as the egg whites on the sort of cocktail you should drink while reading Kwan s books. But if you need to assuage your guilt about summer reading with a little intellectual patina, Kwan has you covered too, His peek into this rarified world is spiked with tart observations about old and new money, the nuances of racism and the way they all interact A cheeky reminder that those who think they can t make a romance or a comedy of manners work in an entirely non-white setting are not just lying or kidding themselves, but wasting the almost gluttonous opportunities available to storytellers who stretch beyond convention Fizzy, highly entertaining. Alyssa Rosenberg, The Washington Post The high jinks of China s young and reckless 0.0001 percent keep you turning the page [A] black comedy What I enjoyed most while reading China Rich Girlfriend were the moments of nihilistic glee at the self-absorption of the Chinese demimonde, the American Pyscho-like obsession with designer brands and desirable addresses. Kwan speaks of this culture with the authoritative tone of an insider with anthropological analysis detailing the habits of various subspecies of crazy rich Asians. Arthur Chu, The New York Times Book Review "Take a Jane Austen novel, combine it with Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and set it in the glittering capitals of Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore. What have you got? This deliciously fun follow-up to Kwan's bestselling Crazy Rich Asians...[a] field guide to Asia's uberwealthy echelon and comic satire at its best." People Last year Kevin Kwan introduced summer fun readers to a cast of characters entirely foreign but somehow familiar In China Rich Girlfriend, he continues that story but throws into the mix the recently acquired fortunes of China that take to easy street like it s a superhighway They offer a taste of Asian opulence served with skewering humor. Delectable wretched excess. New York Daily News Those Crazy Rich Asians are back as a mix of old and new characters in Kwan's new novel, China Rich Girlfriend... The book brings the foibles of the wealthy into a new setting: China. It reflects the ascendance of a new elite the product of the booming economy of mainland China. This fresh crop of billionaires form a new strata of Asia's one percent, what Kwan likes to call the "China Rich." Kwan's characters are powerful and attractive, living in the lap of luxury. All Things Considered, NPR weekend "The summer's funniest beach read. When Crazy Rich Asians hit shelves in peak beach-read season two summers ago, readers ate up its unrestrained and uproarious fictional depictions of the opulent lives of Asia's super elite. . . China Rich Girlfriend follow[s] the same multitentacled clan and their world-traveling, high-spending, and backstabbing antics." Lauren Christensen, Vanity Fair The much-anticipated sequel to Crazy Rich Asians (a great summer read in its own right), China Rich Girlfriend continues the tale of Rachel Chu and her upcoming nuptials to Nicholas Young, heir to one of the greatest fortunes in Asia... With the same hilarity and scandalous narrative as the first novel, China Rich Girlfriend will not disappoint both fans and newcomers to the series. Town and Country When you're on a never-ending long-haul flight: China Rich Girlfriend, Kevin Kwan s frothy sequel to his debut novel, Crazy Rich Asians, revisits the world of Hong Kong s and Singapore s super-super-elite. Kwan himself is from Singapore, and these sharply observed books have an insider s authority. Girlfriend is also so diverting that it (almost) made me forget that my seatmate on a recent flight from New York to Dubai was muttering to himself nonstop. Hanya Yanagihara, Conde Nast Traveler "Lifestyles of the rich and famous, China-style. A follow to Kwan's lively debut, Crazy Rich Asians, this new book delivers more over-the-top consumption in Asia's most exclusive locale. The Houston Chronicle Kevin Kwan has a new book coming out soon. It's called China Rich Girlfriend, and if you don't know why this is shriek-worthy news, allow me to introduce you to Kwan's first novel, Crazy Rich Asians, [a] gloriously, irreverently fun and dishy novel. Roxane Gay, NPR His first book was a riot of high-spending extremes, and in its sequel Kevin Kwan again revels in a world where Gulfstream jets come with their own koi ponds The equivalent of a Bubble Tea concoction laced with Henry James extracts and Jackie Collins sprinkles tracking a level of wealth that makes even Downton Abbey look more like Downton Arriviste Unravelling the endless modes of snobbery is sport for Kwan, and the set pieces in China Rich Girlfriend are such that even Serena van der Woodsen might gasp Ingenious In the same way that Edith Wharton catalogued the Gilded Age via novels like The Age of Innocence, Kwan in his novels is doing his bit for a China that now has the second-highest number of millionaires in the world. Shinan Govani, The Daily Beast Kwan returns with an equally good-natured, catty-as-hell sequel to his bestselling roman à clef about China's new and old money dynasties. For those not cued in, Kwan's tone is breakneck and utterly disarming part Oscar Wilde, part Judith Krantz, part Arthur Frommer . . . Hilarious . . . Over-the-top and hard to stop. Kirkus China Rich Girlfriend is the most fun I ve had reading a book in quite some time. The vibrantly drawn characters and equally vivid settings in and around Beijing make for a jam-packed, lively story [and] a cast of characters who are wholly believable and human. Amy Scribner, BookPage To be let loose into the decadent playground of the filthy rich offers the reader a heady taste of vicarious escapism Yet to dismiss this book as merely a soulless lark would be a disservice to Kwan and his impeccable writing. Behind their dapper and chic exteriors, his caricatures have messy emotional lives and grapple with the same problems facing the rest of us not blessed with unfathomable wealth Read China Rich Girlfriend for the exuberant spectacle of zippy vintage cars, gossipy matriarchs-who-lunch and reckless profligacy but read it also for its very engaging narrative about people like us. Thuy On, The Sydney Morning Herald What happens when the young woman destined to marry Asia s most eligible bachelor gets derailed by a shocking family secret? That s what Kwan (Crazy Rich Asians) examines in this amusing, whirlwind novel about Rachel Chu, who discovers her long-lost father and falls headlong into a Shanghai the fashion! the social climbing! the secrets! wilder than her wildest dreams. The Miami Herald I loved China Rich Girlfriend Like Gossip Girl and Dynasty and the royal family of England all at the same time. Kwan s characters behave hideously and it s hilarious. Elaine Lui, Flare Kwan s latest follows in the footsteps of his wildly imaginative Crazy Rich Asians but adds even more conspicuous consumption and over-the-top behavior Resplendent with gorgeous description . The dialog is always top-notch. There are many fascinating substories... A sprinkling of footnotes adds local expressions, insightful asides, and Kwan s own snarky personal comments. Among the many laugh-out-loud incidents are examples of the extreme cheapness of some of these ultrawealthy people and tidbits about their staff The conclusion offers up additional shocks and surprises that will have readers clamoring for more. Those who enjoy splendid writing and getting a glimpse at how the other half (probably much less than 50 percent) lives will delight in this book. Library Journal (Starred Review) Very enjoyable... Just as funny as Crazy Rich Asians, this globe-spanning tale of excess includes enough snootiness and class snobbery to fill a multitude of designer handbags. It s a modern-day comedy of manners that highlights what it means to be China rich as well as the things that money can never buy. Minneapolis Star Tribune"China Rich Girlfriend is an engaging page-turner with a multi-layered, inventive narrative. Kwan has clearly taken a few lessons from one of America's great social satirists - think Tom Wolfe set loose on the wealthiest enclaves of Confucian Asia His sequel is not only dazzlingly creative (a private jet decorated to look like a Balinese resort? Take me there, please!) and rollicking good fun, but also ambitious in its scope and dimension. With China Rich Girlfriend, Kwan shows readers that to get rich is one thing, but to get crazy rich is glorious. He also proves his standing as one of the few authors talented, confident and savvy enough to engage an international readership and serve up the New Asia on a gleaming 24-karat gold platter."South China Morning Post Singapore-based sensation Kevin Kwan follows up his smash success, Crazy Rich Asians, which is currently being made into a film, with another sure-to-be hit. As with his first novel, Kwan takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the lives and nuptial preparations of absurdly wealthy society folks in mainland China. Readers Digest (Canada)China Rich Girlfriend, Kevin Kwan s sequel to the bestselling Crazy Rich Asians, is perhaps even more delicious than the first A frothy ction focused on a multigenerational, intermarried, mega-rich clan Kwan created a new hybrid universe one where there s a preoccupation with lineage and marrying off daughters into rich families that is the realm of Jane Austen, combined with an obsession with social hierarchy and status signifiers straight out of Tom Wolfe [This] delicious sequel manages to be more nuanced (and savage) in its social deconstruction and even more fun Moments of human generosity and decency are peppered throughout. But that s not the pleasure: This stems from tut-tutting the flagrant display of wealth while picking up insider tips and luxuriating in a voyeuristic glimpse into the original Dynasty. You is, at once, a modern-day Horatio Alger, representing the desires and frustrations of millions in rising Asia, a bildungsroman hero, by turns knavish and recognizably human, who sallies forth from the provinces to find his destiny, and a nameless but intimately known soul, whose bittersweet romance with the pretty girl possesses a remarkable emotional power. With How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia Mr. Hamid reaffirms his place as one of his generation s most inventive and gifted writers. Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times Thanks to Hamid's meticulous use of detail and his sympathy for a man on the make in a society of endemic poverty we engage deeply with a serious character whose essence remains his own yet who stands as a figure representative of his time and place, an effect only the best novelists can create This tale of an unscrupulous striver may bring to mind a globalized version of The Great Gatsby. Given the unabashed gimmickry of Hamid's how-to design, it's a pleasant surprise to find that his book is nearly that good. Alan Cheuse, NPR "A love story and bildungsroman disguised as a self-help book, and the result has all the inventiveness, exuberance and pathos that the writer's fans have come to expect Marvelous and moving." TIME MagazineExtraordinarily clever Hamid has taken the most American form of literature the self-help book and transformed it to tell a surprisingly moving story. Ron Charles, The Washington Post The marriage of two curiously compatible genres self-help and the old-fashioned bildungroman is just one of the pleasures of Mohsin Hamid s shrewd and slippery new novel, a rags-to-rishes story that works on a head-splitting number of levels. It s a love story and a study of seismic social change. It parodies a get-rich-quick book and gestures to a new direction for the novel, all in prose so pure and purposeful it pases straight through into the bloodstream. It intoxicates. Parul Sehgal, The New York Times Book ReviewWonderfully astringent Hamid is a sly witness to a traditional culture s dizzying trajectory supermodels stalk city billboards, a drone hovers ominously in the sky but his satiric impulse gives way to compassion for the intimacies that keep us tethered in a rapidly changing world. Vogue This is one of those original works that are also resonant as a record of human experience and geo-political shift, and a strong argument for Hamid as one of the most important writers working today. An enjoyable read no matter who you are. The Daily Beast "Relentlessly brilliant Hamid is a master stylist, and his third novel is, I think, his best thus far There is something so rich and so deeply authentic in [the protagonist s] romance that its rendering alone hooks the reader the novel ends with one of the most stunning final sentences I ve read in contemporary fiction, a sentence that no review will ever quote, but an indelible sentence, which will live in your heart, mind, and soul long after you read it." The Los Angeles Review of Books"Dazzling an addictive, muscular piece of storytelling [How To Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia] shows a writer at the height of his powers, with a hell of a story to tell a tremendous novel: tender, sharp and formally daring, a portal into a fast-moving, vividly realised world." The Guardian "Mohsin Hamid s latest novel boasts a startlingly distinctive voice as commanding and unadorned as its title." Pico Iyer, The New York Times Book Review "Hamid exercises perfect control as he spins the life story of one man's struggle with turbulent times and economics in his unnamed Asian city. It's an impressive feat that he reveals this life, infancy to death, in a little more than 200 pages. That he achieves this with humor and pathos, and creates a last line that evokes the sweep of Molly Bloom's soliloquy in Ulysses well, it knocked the skepticism right out of me Vivid, pungent and sweet, How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia is the kind of well-told literary novel that restores faith in the genre. More of this, please." Cleveland Plain Dealer "Hamid is as much an inventive stylist as he is a gifted storyteller As a result, his novels are compulsively readable, and "Rising Asia" is no exception Tremendously profound and entertaining." Alex Gilvarry, Boston Globe Bracingly inventive it might be the best book you read in 2013. V Magazine "Astounding An ambitious, moving story about love and loneliness [that] constantly surprises by reinventing itself just as characters reinvent themselves At the heart of the book is [the] consideration of what it means to succeed, to rise or to help oneself. How does one live and die? The questions simmer below the surface of this tremendous, wise and surprisingly moral book." The San Francisco ChronicleAn utter delight How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia is one of the most tender narratives you will ever read Amazing. Counterpunch Hamid is one of the best writers working today How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia is filled with flashes of brilliance, deeply moving passages, and beautifully clear prose. The Millions Mohsin Hamid s hotly anticipated new book tells the story of young love between capitalism and the latest target of its cupid s arrow: Asia Political, romantic, exciting, and a page-turner throughout. Harper s Bazaar "Brilliant In its cleverness, its slightly cruel satire and its complex understanding of both Western and Eastern paradigms, How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia is pure Hamid His storytelling style is both timeless and contemporary, a postmodern Scheherazade This novel is smart about many things, including medicine and the processes of death, but is smartest of all about literature itself. Marion Winik, Newsday "Isn t this the definition of great fiction, that even when it begins with a character (tubercular, hiding on the dirt floor under his mother s cot) who s nothing like you, by the end you are convinced that it really is about you? That s a kind of miracle, of the sort that self-help books can only dream of achieving." Salon "The protagonist, who Hamid also calls 'you,' is, despite the absence of a name or identified origin, a wonderfully particularized person when, in the last stages of life, 'you' gains a measure of serenity and wisdom, you have tears in your eyes and know that Hamid s novel has done that which few novels are capable of: It has deepened feeling and provoked questions about the meaning of your own world gripping storytelling. Washington Independent Review of BooksThe kind of game Leo Tolstoy might have written, clear-eyed in its dissection of human folly, ambition and love. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Although Hamid's fictional works vary in style and substance, a distinctive sensibility pervades all three: simultaneously warm and ironic, elegant and profane, urbane but equipped with a strong B.S. detector. The Los Angeles Times "In just 12 crisp chapters, you go from a diseased rural nobody to the model of self-made success. It is quite a journey [A] considerable literary talent [who] deploy[s] the second-person narrative with astonishing skill Hamid depicts a land where getting rich is not so much a luxury as a survival tactic." The EconomistMy recommendation for book groups this month is Mohsin Hamid's wry third novel, How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia, and it might just satisfy both reluctant and bold literary explorers. It is at once accessible and exotic, and most definitely filthy rich in fresh material for literary discussion [that] offers a surprisingly heartfelt conclusion. Christian Science Monitor "An astonishing and riveting tale of a man's journey from impoverished rural boy to corporate tycoon." The NationFiction fans should be grateful Mohsin Hamid left his New York corporate cubicle to pursue his grand ambitions of becoming a novelist. The AtlanticEffervescent a universal story, wrought in tightly minimal, evocative prose Mr. Hamid has delivered a payload more nourishing than any self-help book. The New York Observer "A powerful reverie on life in a time of soul-shaking change." Businessweek "Hamid s choice to write a bildungsroman wrapped inside a self-help manual is an inspired one Hamid has left us with no doubts about how state and market, law and crime, nation and corporation, and money and violence go together in rising Asia as in the rest of the world." Bookforum Mohsin Hamid is one of the most talented and formally audacious writers of his generation, and his electrifying new novel is a vital and affecting portrait of a teeming and significant, but largely unrecorded culture. It is a bold formal experiment contained within an elegant novella. It is moving and charming and funny. When you reach the end, you want to go straight back to the beginning. And yes that does mean you. The Telegraph Mohsin Hamid s third novel is many things a love story, an interrogation of the purpose of literary fiction, a portrait of an Asian city In its compassionate glimpse into another s life, Hamid s novel suggests that the routes to success prescribed by self-help books are less hopeful and compelling than the moments that a novel so treasures, the moments in which life is lived. The Sunday Telegraph An ultra-intelligent and knowing account of life in the developing world, as well as an increasingly moving love-story Simply brilliant. The Daily MailDaringly original page-turning. The Independent Cast as a self-help book, about one man's rise from poverty to wealth Hamid s beautifully conceived and exquisitely executed novel demonstrates that, in the right hands, narratorial tricks can be a serious matter, affording slants on the big realities and myths of our time unavailable to meat-and-potato realism. Adam Lively, The Sunday TimesHow to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia turns out to be as much moral fable as it is satire. Fortunately, Hamid makes each mode as fresh as the other. New Statesman The many selves of You, our hero, form a portrait gallery of a disconnected man in a discontinuous world. Self-help books that aren t a novel try to make sense of all this. And fail. Bryan Appleyard, The Sunday Times"At once a quietly moving story of an individual man and a sweeping epic chronicling the economic, social and cultural development of an entire region of the world." Vox Magazine "Hamid s story is at once fable-like and existential the novel is a parable about a new kid of loneliness, a homelessness quite different from the one characteristic of the protagonist s impoverished and uncertain beginnings." The Financial Times "How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia is dead short and narrated in a weird way that rarely gets done in novels It s a winning and surprisingly readable bash at some pretty wild experimentation. Hamid s portrait of rising Asia makes bold use of a newfangled way of compressing a whole life into 200 zipalong hit book pages." Dazed and Confused "Ambition rules in this playful third novel... subtle and rich." Publishers WeeklyThis brilliantly structured, deeply felt book is written with the confidence and bravura of a man born to write. Hamid is at the peak of his considerable powers here, and delivers a tightly paced, preternaturally wise book about a thoroughly likable, thoroughly troubled striver in the messiest, most chaotic ring of the global economy. Completely unforgettable. Dave Eggers, author of A Hologram for the King "Mohsin Hamid is one of the best writers in the world, period. Only a master could have written this propulsive tale of a striver living on the knife's edge, a noir Horatio Alger story for our frenetic, violent times. The road to filthy riches is nasty, brutish, and long, yet Hamid's talent is such that we see the humanity in all this striving indeed, on finishing this extraordinary book, one wonders if the striving might be the sincerest expression of our flawed, fragile humanity." Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk A dazzling stylistic tour de force, a love story disguised as a self-help guide, freighted with sly social satire. As timely and timeless a novel as I ve read in years. Jay McInerney, author of Bright Lights, Big City and How It EndedA marvelous book. Adequate single-volume biographies about FDR abound. But none are as heroically objective and wide-angled as this fine Dallek effort. . . . By tapping into the vast correspondence between Churchill and Roosevelt, Dallek discerns a more strained relationship between the leaders than presupposed. . . . Luckily for us, Roosevelt is with us again in Dallek s outstanding cradle-to-grave study. When it comes to choosing the two indispensable presidents in U.S. history, Dallek places Roosevelt alongside Abraham Lincoln, the other great improviser with Providence on his side. Douglas Brinkley, The Washington Post Dallek fully incorporates into his narrative Roosevelt s complicated, conflicted relationship with the several women in his life and is especially good on the role Eleanor played, as goad and political advisor. He also makes it clear, in a way other biographers do not, that almost from the moment he entered office, Roosevelt set out to educate the nation to the fact that the United States was threatened not only by economic depression at home, but also by fascist aggressions abroad. . . . Dallek s is a workmanlike addition to the literature on Roosevelt. David Nasaw, The New York Times Dallek constantly seeks to find an answer to FDR s political trajectory: What fueled his ambition to serve in the political arena and with what political aims? Also the extent to which it was FDR s experiences abroad as a child, then at school, at Harvard, in the New York legislature that determined his later progress in the real world. Undergirding all of these, Dallek sees Roosevelt s moral war on deceit and corruption. In an era in which moral, linguistic, and financial corruption hold sway, this story could not be more timely. . . . From beginning to end Dallek has earnestly followed his own curiosity as a citizen and as a teacher, so that at last we come to see in FDR the magisterial, central figure in the greatest and richest political tapestry of our nation s entire history. Nigel Hamilton, Boston Globe [Dallek] believes that FDR was a born politician of ferocious and very nearly infallible instincts, and through a combination of extensive research and first-rate storyteller s gifts, he makes the reader believe it, too. His Roosevelt is a man of great but always complicated drives, a worrier and second-guesser who nonetheless often believed the intensely stirring things he so often said and wrote. . . . Dallek relates in fine and compelling detail all the thorniest scandals of the FDR years. . . . But far more prominent than scandal in these pages and far more welcome are Dallek s frequent examinations of the now-forgotten political opposition FDR faced at every stage of his long tenure as president. . . . We see FDR afresh, which is an amazing feat in its own right. Steve Donoghue, Christian Science Monitor An insightful, incisive and intelligent one-volume work of biography and history and a pointed primer on how things in Washington get done. In a period defined by division, gridlock and tweet storms, Dallek crafts a pointillist portrait of the four-term president, who knew almost intuitively how to use the power of his office and how to reach consensus. Peter M. Gianotti, Newsday Few scholars have the qualifications of Robert Dallek to tell this story. . . . Franklin D. Roosevelt: A Political Life covers much more than the momentous challenges faced by FDR as president. It gives an honest outline of his life including his attitudes as a privileged undemocratic snob who used the influence of men he considered unworthy of public influence. . . . Despite the book s size, the complexity of its subject, and the narrative s variance with common public memory, it is a fast engaging read that corrects, even scatters, misconceptions. The author provides an entertaining narrative in a style not unlike that of FDR. Robert S. Davis, New York Journal of Books A characteristically adroit work that is balanced in coverage and prudent in assessment. . . . [Dallek s] emphasis falls on the two great crises of FDR s presidency the Depression and WWII and highlights FDR s emergence as a skillful politician. . . . All will benefit from Dallek s principal addition to earlier works on FDR: the convincing argument that as early as May 1943 FDR was showing signs of the illness that would kill him. The result is a comprehensive retelling of a major American life that will rank among the standard biographies of its subject. Publishers Weekly This focused study of the four term-winning president emphasizes his instinctive feel for the public mood. . . . Dallek is a seasoned presidential historian and biographer. Here, he writes with authority about Franklin Roosevelt s political life and mission to create a new social order during a time of enduring national transformation. . . . Dallek examines several formative factors that contributed greatly to Roosevelt's ability to successfully tap the public sentiment and address significant issues. . . . The author also effectively shows how Roosevelt was an astute political animal who sometimes made questionable decisions for political expedience. . . . A lively one-volume treatment well-suited to libraries and schools. Kirkus Reviews [Dallek] takes on the daunting task of providing a comprehensive one-volume biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He succeeds in presenting the abundance of information in a flowing and highly readable narrative, and he supports FDR s story with memorable sketches of the president s many associates . . . his varied opponents, the foreign leaders who served opposite him (Dallek is particularly good on Churchill), and many others. Eleanor, too, is portrayed in full, complete with a notably honest account of her marriage to Franklin. . . . A first-rate biography and a must-buy for most public-library history collections. Booklist (starred review) Recounts the politician s greatest challenges, including trying presidential elections and the years leading up to and during World War II. Dallek s familiarity with his subject and deep understanding of American history and context shines in his clear and engaging prose. . . . readers will gain a solid sense of Roosevelt s political mind and an inspiring appreciation of his mighty character. . . . This highly recommended, expertly crafted book will please a variety of readers, especially those interested in biographies as well as presidential, military, and American history. Library Journal (starred review) Robert Dallek has brought a lifetime s immersion in the American presidency to produce what will almost certainly be seen as the most authoritative single-volume biography of our most important 20th Century president. Franklin D. Roosevelt: A Political Life is a landmark work that deserves to be placed on the same shelf as those of Arthur Schlesinger Jr., James MacGregor Burns, and William E. Leuchtenburg. Richard Moe, author of Roosevelt s Second Act: The Election of 1940 and the Politics of War A great liberal historian has written the best one-volume biography about our greatest liberal president. Sparing neither criticism nor admiration, Robert Dallek offers an FDR relevant to our sharply divided nation: a master politician who gained the trust of most of his fellow Americans by empathizing eloquently with their problems and working himself to death to solve them. Michael Kazin, author of War Against War: The American Fight for Peace, 1914-1918 Robert Dallek is a leading authority on the presidency and his book on Roosevelt is a masterful and complex portrayal of one of America s greatest presidents, a leader who had the vision and character to reveal to the country its potential as a great nation. Howard Dean, former DNC chairman and six-term governor of Vermont Robert Dallek s brilliant portrayal of Franklin D. Roosevelt is an inspiring read, a timely reminder that political leadership involves judgment and intelligence. Battling the Great Depression and a global war, the 32nd president harnessed wisdom to decision making, and political acumen to governance. No historian understands FDR better than Dallek, who has captured in this single page-turning volume how America was really made great again. Martin J.
