Wave Rotor Technology For Gas Turbine Enhancement

Wave rotor technology has been in its developmentstages for more than a century now. The complexity ofwave propagation and the computational challengeswere some of the biggest reasons the technologydid not gain prominence. Recent advancements incontrols, increased research in wave phenomenon andimproved computational power has rejuvenated thisfascinating technology. In the quest for improvingthe efficiency of power generation devices whilekeeping emissions low, wave rotors have a bright future.Wave rotors are energy exchange devices that transferenergy between two media. This body of research isfocused towards the efficient design of a viableporting to be used on a test rig for gas turbineenhancement. The first part of this research involvesa 1-D algebraic code developed at MSU to provide aporting geometry for any given operating conditionwhile estimating the amount of Exhaust GasRecirculation. The code was benchmarked using twocommercial codes, GT-POWER and a 2-D computationalfluid dynamic code, FLUENT.
