Venus Airlines was set up in 1992 and began operations in April 1993 using McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft for charter flights from Scandinavia and Germany to Greece. During the 1994 tourist season, the McDonnell Douglas MD-87 was received and also the Boeing 757-200. Venus Airlines suffered because of organizational problems, with the flights being late on many occasions and the lack of punctuality hurt the airline's reputation among tour operators.
