It takes as its guiding thread the episode in Martianus Capella\u2019s \u201cMarriage of Philology and Mercury\u201d in which Philology, touched by Immor\u00adtality, vomits up books which are then appropriated by the Muses and the liberal arts for use in their teaching. This episode\u2019s combination of visceral physicality with the promise of immortality invites comparison with concerns current among philologists today, such as \u201cmaterial\u201d and \u201cqueer\u201d philology, the extent to which manuscript culture is legible, and the nature of textual production and reproduction.
