Next Generation of Photoalignment

The fascinating ability to control molecularorientation by light has drawn many attentions forthe last decade. In fact it enables largeopportunities to design materials with controllableproperties and use it to create new electro-opticaldevices. This book dwells upon the physical mechanismleading to photo orientation of molecules, also knownas photoalignment. The problem is addressed asstatistical average of the sequence of independentevents on photo-dissociation and self-association ofreversible intermolecular bonds (e.g. H-bonds), whichenable and disable self-consistency condition formolecular relaxation in long range Mean fieldpotential. Feasible theoretical description isverified in original experiments on photo orientationof molecules of dyes and dye mixtures. Novelconsiderations shed light on the functional role ofspecific radical groups and give hint of new chemicalstructures of photoalignment materials for opticallyrewritable electronic paper and photonics devicesdescribed here.
